@50th Anniversary, Lina’s Orchard

The  post of Gil Mendoza (Dirty Dozen ’69) in the Varrons Yahoo group a day after the August 25 festivities succinctly describes the overall mood of the golden anniversary celebration of the UP Varrons. Following are exactly his words:

To those who were able to attend the 50th Anniversary, another Happy anniversary greetings! To those who were unable to attend … well you missed a memorable event … indeed a truly memory-making event. Too bad … you should have made every effort to to join us! 50th comes only once … and you missed it! I don’t know how you will ever be able to get over that!

It was a great occasion to be part of a Varron activity again! It was a LOT OF FUN. It was great seeing and reconnecting with Vrods and Sisses … many of whom I have not met for decades! I felt like the 70’s again, sharing laughters, banters, stories, and yes many fun games. I had the misfortune of being endured while playing volleyball! But did not detract me from enjoying the occasion … every minute of it. I guess I have to be reminded that I am no longer as young as I want to be. Though hobbling for the rest of the afternoon and evening, I still had loads of fun!

The evening was particularly magnificent! Food was great … the cake was fabulous, dessert was overflowing with different kinds of cakes! After taking a few shots of good wines, I thought for minute I forgot that I was supposed to be in pain with my sprain left knee, and lower back problems. It is indeed risky playing volleyball with the novices … but hey, they had fun too! Seeing our vrods in their ‘best’ Sunday attires, and the fabulous looking sisses. Yes, many of us have ‘matured’ … wider waists for both vrods and sis, a few more grey hairs (for those who were lucky to still have some), fewer teeth even, and more wrinkles! But we still are the same vibrant, laid-back, fun-loving but always dignified in the way we do things!

Kudos to every one who participated, but especially those who spent long hours preparing for the event! Special thanks also to those who contributed food (the sight of a lechon and sugpo somehow led me to forget my diet for just one day!). Many many thanks for making our 50th truly Golden!

The occasion was also graced by the presence of many of our charter members! It was great to finally see them in person, some of whom I only knew by name! It was great to see them receive the awards and recognition they truly deserve being the pacesetters and trailblazers they were in establishing our organization!

I tried to visit all the tables despite my painful left leg and throbbing pain on my lower back! I shared a few ‘wine toast” to some that I know … but of course I can’t share toasts to everyone because many faces I do not personally know … but mainly because I wanted to remain sober.

How do I feel the day after? I still have pain in my left leg and lower back … but I have joy in my heart having been a part of the event. It was truly momentous! I hope to be able to attend many more of these anniversaries!
