Anniversary hangover

Talk about demonstrating the concept of statistical probability at the 45th anniversary celebration of the UPVL. It was almost 5:30 in the morning of August 26, and everyone was completely exhausted from the previous night of dancing and karaoke wailing to the tunes of the top music hits of the 80s and 90s. Vrod Gabriel “Abring” San Diego (FQS ’78) was one of the several Varrons who crowded, to catch some precious sleep, the 16-bed dorm-type room rented by the organization in La Vista Pansol Resort. Sis Malou Torrizo-Santos (Repertory ’76) decided to wake Abring up that early morning so he could join the group heading to the residence of a Varron couple in Los Baños.

Abring's slippersStill groggy from sleep, Vrod Abring reluctantly got up, put on his rubber slippers, groped his way out of the room in semi-darkness and went straight to his car where some Vrods and Sisses were already waiting for him. Along the way, he discovered to his amazement that he was wearing a pair of slippers almost of the same size, both Havanah brand (definitely not the expensive, authentic Havaiana) but of two different colors: one blue and the other brown.  He confessed that what he really owned was the latter color. Can you just imagine the amusement, or more likely, the shock of another Varron who will be wearing one more mismatched pair, colorwise, on the way home?

Where’s the fire?

This story is about Evelyn “Len” Amit-Corado (Crystal Batch ’77) when she was studying at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) way back in . . . (don’t ask). Nakatira sya sa AIM dorm with centralized air-conditioning system.  One night, hindi sya makatulog dahil sa sobra ang lamig. Hinanap nya ang thermostat to reset the temperature to a warmer setting.

Finding none, she just opened the windows. Dahil naging comfortably warm nakatulog na siya only to be awakened by the sound of a fire alarm. All the students were made to vacate the premises. Still in her night dress, pupungaspungas at takot na takot si Len na lumabas ng dorm.  Nong nandoon na sila lahat sa lawn, nagtataka sila dahil wala naman sunog, much more usok.  After the investigation, it was found out who/what the culprit was. Opening the windows made Len’s room warm enough to set the fire alarm.  Of course, she was so embarrassed she couldn’t look at her schoolmates in the eyes for at least two weeks.
