Lest these literary gems get deleted and forever be dumped into the trash bin beyond retrieval, I am resurrecting them here (1) for posterity, (2) for those who missed the opportunity to read them and wear a knowing smile (or a sheepish grin) and (3) for those who did not, a second chance to savor the lines.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-2 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p>Here goes\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Abring (a.k.a Gabby to non-Varrons), as always, is true to his playful soul with this tongue-twister:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>pumatak<br \/>\npumutak<br \/>\npumutok<br \/>\npumatok<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>but he can be dead serious when he wants to:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>langis at mitsa sa baso<br \/>\nhandang magdulot ng ilaw<br \/>\nsa darating na araw<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>which, incidentally, he was inspired to write while offering prayers and lighted candles to his departed beloved last All Souls&#8217; Day.<\/p>\n<p>There is also Norvie&#8217;s take on why anyone would insist on anything at all:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Ang pwede<br \/>\nay pwede<br \/>\npero di pwede<br \/>\nang di pwede<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>and had all the gutsy innocence to inquire: \u201c<em>Vro, Haiku din kaya yan<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p>Sometime later, probably upon gathering his wits, he betrayed his true profession with the lines:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Variation in panicles<br \/>\nBountiful harvest<br \/>\nEaten by rats<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Mae quipped with delight \u2013 \u201c<em>Masaya nga &#8230; more please<\/em>!\u201d I could imagine her jumping and clapping with excitement, as she waited with bated breath for the string of words that slowly flowed out of her email inbox. Obviously, she was not disappointed. Bert, who claims to be \u201cnot an expert on haiku\u201d, but just an &#8220;appreciator\u201d, willingly obliged with a romantic piece:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Under the taut skin<br \/>\nof a borrowed umbrella &#8212;<br \/>\nFirst kiss<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Somehow, contrary to the hesitation, tension and innocence that the lines convey, I picture two fumbling adolescents with their faces all wet and messy!<\/p>\n<p>In another more PG13 piece, he turned whimsical:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>colored popsicles<br \/>\nthe children<br \/>\ncompared tongues<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently, his later verse:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>hard rain<br \/>\nno cloud<br \/>\ncould have held it<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>piqued one Varron&#8217;s curiosity: \u201cWhat could be that &#8216;it&#8217;?\u201d Which, interestingly, was qualified by a Beloved Sis (writers and artist are mum on the essence of their work): \u201c. . . it&#8217;s like suppressed feelings . . . for the sake of your sanity, you just have to let that person know. Your heart is so miniscule to contain a feeling so big, so intense, so passionate, so sincere, so ah basta!<em>Ibubulalas mo kasi sasabog na ang dibdib mo<\/em>!\u00a0<em>Hayyyy <\/em>&#8230;\u201d Again, I could just imagine her, complete with theatrics!<\/p>\n<p>Mon chewed on the bitter reality that is Philippine politics:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Eighty seven million fools<br \/>\nLed by a pretender queen<br \/>\nBought friends cheer, a few just whine<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>with an interesting variant of the same from Dennis:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Eighty seven million pairs<br \/>\nCame brown eyes in the theater<br \/>\nThe wise saw circus<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dennis also paid tribute to the National Hero with this Rizal verse:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Bilin na liham<br \/>\nSapatos at lampara<br \/>\nHuling paalam<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>and even translated in Spanish his own English obra maestra The Music \/\u00a0<em>La Musica<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<table width=\"461\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"195\" height=\"128\">forlorn waves carry<br \/>\nstories and songs unheard<br \/>\nfrom the weary sea<br \/>\nwhile wind chimes vibrate<br \/>\nunmarried sounds of music<br \/>\nfrom seawind passing<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"254\"><em>las ondas abandonadas llevan<br \/>\nlas historias y las canciones<br \/>\nno escuchadas del cansado mar<br \/>\nmientras los carillones de viento vibran<br \/>\nsonidos solteros de la m\u00fasica<br \/>\npasa la brisa de mar<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Aware of his previous sojourn in the Land of the Rising Sun, I was expecting something more Japanese. The pen of Loids, the lone sis who joined the creative fray, drips with a glint of hope:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Hush, don\u2019t fear<br \/>\nA promise . . .<br \/>\nAfter the rain<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Nostalgia for and a future resolve to return back, even in death, to one\u2019s birthland is the theme of the quadruplet\u00a0<strong><em>Ang Tapon<\/em><\/strong> contributed by Tony, who reminded the e-group that he is living not \u201cDown Under\u201d in Australia but \u2018Up Above\u2019 in Canada right now:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Bayang iniwan<br \/>\nLaging ninanais balikan<br \/>\nKahit man lang sa libingan<br \/>\nMatabunan ng lupang tinubuan<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We feel the heartwarming and pragmatic wisdom of the passing years in Terry\u2019s words:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Hate &#8211; people seek to kill<br \/>\nLove &#8211; people seek to heal<br \/>\nLove\/hate &#8211; let&#8217;s make a deal<\/p>\n<p>Let bloom the rose in the forest of our sight<br \/>\nLet boom the voice in the realm of our quiet<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He, however, can turn comical, as with this fragment derived from \u201ca poetry jousting \u2013 like balagtasan \u2013 between oldtimers in Bohol long time ago\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<table width=\"450\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"230\"><em>Kuridong maka-iibog<br \/>\nPaglabay ko sa kakugnan<br \/>\nDunay kabaw nga nangitlog<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"230\">A desirable riddle<br \/>\nWhen I passed by a cogon patch<br \/>\nA carabao laying eggs<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Roly also caught up with a Cebuano\/Visayan piece:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<table width=\"450px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"230px\"><em>Haiku kuno ni<br \/>\nsa pulong lisod sabton<br \/>\ndili mapuslan<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"230\">Haiku is it<br \/>\nin words incomprehensible<br \/>\nuseless<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>which elicited a gentle admonition from Bert that it would better to write not about haiku per se but just to write one. We sense the wonders of the night and the acceptance of what a day brings in Manny&#8217;s little jewels:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>it comes it goes<br \/>\nit\u2019s but another day<br \/>\nof solitude<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I could understand the exasperation of Neneng with the rigidity and discipline of the number of syllables required \u201c\u2026<em>Haaayy na Kuuhh di ako makacompose ng Haiku ko.<\/em>\u201d But she deserves an A for persistence \u201c.. but am still trying\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Whether haiku or not, I am happy that several Varrons had put time and effort to squeeze out their creative juices to the last drop.
