January 26, Wednesday, Makeni<\/span>. This is my mid-point stop-over on my way to Kabala, my final placement base, after the In-Country Training the week before . I am here for an orientation with my employer MADAM, which has its office in this city. One of the watchmen of this compound, which includes the VSO house and the UN Staff house, is a nice, jolly man named Alfred; not his not real name\u00a0(get it?). Back in the Philippines, where I come from, they are called \u201csecurity guards\u201d (watchmen being\u00a0those who repair watches and clocks) and are almost always armed with a handgun while on duty,\u00a0sometimes even a shotgun. But Alfred does not even carry a chewing gum with him to last him his long\u00a0shift, much less a gun, which is understandable in the light of the country\u2019s recent history. He eats his\u00a0meals at home before reporting, there is just not enough, he says, to take some with him to tie him over\u00a0eight hours of unsleep.<\/p>\n

I share some of my food with him, and some Aikido moves which he awkwardly imitates and yearns to\u00a0learn; he reciprocates by helping me in my Krio struggle, and we chew the rag in between his required\u00a0walk-arounds in the compound.<\/p>\n

January 30, Saturday, Makeni<\/span>. Nine-ish in the morning, I hear the voice of an uman, not in the peculiar Krio lilt, but Brit English. Then she emerges through the open door, in midriff pink top, navel sufficiently peeking, well-worn jeans and sandwiched between front-and-back packs. She knew my name, expecting to meet me there. Ditto. I learned she is a VSO-YFD Volunteer based in Kabala, and her placement has just ended, passing her room in the VSO house there to me. Might there be a hint of her former presence there?<\/p>\n

January 31, Sunday, Makeni<\/span>. It is night, and I am alone in the house, except for Alfred, the guard, I mean the watchman. John, Amy, and Saahiel are out. Josphat too, but not before handing me out a local beer in what looks like a 7-UP jade-hued bottle. I take out a lounge chair to the porch to compare it with our own San Miguel Pale Pilsen. No contest there. It\u2019s now dark as the gen-set is still off, and without the glare of the perimeter lights I can see that the night sky is hazy.<\/p>\n

February 2, Tuesday, Kabala<\/span>. My second day here. All that talk about Kabala being nippy seemed just hot air. Easily in the mid-thirties in mid-day. This morning I attended presentations of the UN-FAO about its Italian-lead project FSCA (Food Security through the Commercialization of Agriculture), a study on Salone biodiversity and medicinal properties of some local plants, and the secret life of bees. Not the movie, but serious talk about honey value chain. Like the almost alphabet soup of local and international NGOs represented there, I met some people of equally diverse provenance: Felix, a German working with CARE-SL, Italians Laura and Fulvio, German-speaking Peruvian Valerie, Dutch Froukje, and Spanish Lydia Martinez. The Philippines was under Spain for more than 300 years, and of the more than 85 million Filipinos there could be a million Lydia Martinezes, a name that is just so so common there. She laughed.<\/p>\n

I do miss the cool nights back home, coming easy as a turn of a knob to Low, Med, or Hi. But at least, compared to Freetown and Makeni, the nights here in Kabala are much cooler. Thankfully the temperature dips by nightfall and by dawn it can be nippy cold. I sleep with the glass-paned windows open (beyond the screen and steel grills). Sometimes when I find myself awake past midnight, I squint at my home-time-set watch and know that the kids are now in school and my wife is in her office.<\/p>\n

February 6, Saturday. It\u2019s a little past 6 in the morning. From the porch of our VSO house I am vis-\u00e0-vis the barren rock face of Warawara hills, just 500 meters or so away — a bald, eighty-degree granite wall that could easily be one and a half hectares in area. The air is laden with moisture, and I load my lungs in slow, heavy breaths. If I take off my shirt I am sure I will shiver. Back home my wife is now past half her office hours, two hours past lunch. I think of her and distill the moment:<\/p>\n

I am the only volunteer in the house these past few days. John is in Makeni, Saahiel is touring the country with Amy. I look forward to a quiet weekend ahead. There is a nice spot at the back of our house, where trees completely shade an area from direct sunlight. This would have been a cool refuge from the daily searing heat, but the waft coming from our neighbor\u2019s outhouse just completely spoils Warawara Hills, a few hundred meters from the VSO house, Kabala it. In this place bereft of running water, what is a quicker option than a hole in the ground and some timber boards appropriately spaced in between for fast deposition? Yet I know about improved pit latrines or compost toilets where controlled decomposition is used to minimize odor and improve\u00a0sanitation and are appropriate for areas with no sewer system. But I am just a humble water management adviser here. Much as I would like to help, tough sh\u2014t, I have to work on dams, not droppings. Farms, not feces. So I pick up my drink and retreat inside.<\/p>\n

A lot of indiscriminate burning is going on in the countryside. Burning encourages new growth of grass and other vegetation. Ash left behind is fertilizer. New grass means succulent forage for cattle, as well as wild game that then can be caught for their meat. Burning also is a quick way to clear land for farming. Yet burned vegetative cover hastens soil erosion. Eroded soil means low crop yields. In good there is bad, bad in good. Yin and yang.<\/p>\n
