In the past years the UPVL have been conducting leadership training seminar activities as an important part of ensuring that UPVL are equipped with organizational know-how towards contributing the realization of its organizational principles and mandates.<\/em><\/p>\n

However, recent activities have fallen short of expectations for UPVL to project organizational cohesiveness and exemplary leadership. These observations and constructive criticisms aired by concerned Alumni revealed that capacity building support and guidance for the UPVL resident members is needed. In a positive light, these criticisms have brought initiatives from some of the UPVL alumni and translate observations into a responsive action plan. The conduct of a Varrons Organizational Leadership Training Seminar (VOLTS) is formulated. The VOLTS is envisioned to be a continuing capacity building endeavour that will contribute to strengthen organizational consolidation, progressive development of leadership and harness collective and individual potentials of UPVL as an asset of the academic community and society in general.<\/em><\/p>\n

Orientation and bonding at VOLTS<\/p><\/div>\n

The Varrons Organizational and Leadership Training Seminar (VOLTS) was successfully conducted on May 31 to June 2, 2013 in Tahananng Ama in Brgy. Putho-Tuntungin, Los Banos, Laguna, which was attended by fourteen (14) participants. The three day training seminar is comprised of six modules, namely, Varrons Orientation, Leadership, Planning and Time Management, Parliamentary Procedure and National Situation and analysis. Added on the training is the spiritual retreat for the participants. Generally, the objective of the Training seminar is to promote effective and exemplary leadership and organizational skills among the members of the UPVL.As we go back, this activity was last conducted on 2006 which participated by the present organizer and other members at that time.<\/p>\n

On the first day of the training, it was started by the registration of the participants and opening of the program headed by Christian Kevin C. Latiza (Philanthropist ’05). The participants and the facilitators were introduced and acquainted to each other and were also briefed in the house rules and grouping for logistics. There is also levelling off that was done to set the expectations of the participants and to meet the objectives of the facilitators.<\/p>\n

The first module is headed by Alfie M. Torres (JAM ’07) which tackles the Varrons Orientation. This module generally aims to recognize the organization culturally. It will aim to reacquaint the members regarding the roots of the organization, instil the members the contributions of the organization to the community and review the principles, virtues, values and system of UPVL.<\/p>\n

\"Training<\/a>

On the second day of the training seminar, Leadership was presented and discussed as the second module of the training which is handled by Kevin. He discussed the concept of leadership and contributes some of his experience and relates those experiences to the present situation in the organization. The third module concerned in the Planning and Time Management which led by Mary Joy C. Buitre (Star Gazers ’08)\u00a0and Tony Rose A. Consignado (Magnifique Sechs ’07), while the fourth and fifth module discussed about Team Building and Parliamentary Procedure which was facilitated by Mae Belen C. Llanza (Philanthropist ’05). In the Team Building activity, the organizational web of personality has the most interesting and challenging activity done in the entire training seminar. In this activity, all the participants must cross and should not touch the string when crossing the hole of the web, which at the end of the activity all the participants are already, crossed in the web of life. The National Situation and Analysis is facilitated and discussed by Mae Belen and Roven, all the participants watched Bayan Ko<\/em> (a six part mini-series produced by GMA News TV). Though, it is only the first episode of the series was watched by the participants, many local issues was given emphasize and also can be learned as we relate on the vision and mission of our organization. There was also a debate that goes on the activity. Each team shows there best in articulating in their opinions in the topic given to them.<\/p>\n

On the last day, the culminating activity was conducted through an Amazing race which gives the participant more fun and excitement because the game was modified in more thrilling and challenging stations. On the other hand, Sister Lau led the spiritual retreat for the participants and become very helpful to the objective of the training seminar as they become candid with their feelings for each of the participants.<\/p>\n

In summary, all the participants show some improvement in their leadership and they become open and communicated with each other members. The trainees hoped that thiswill not be the end of the process and were looking forward to a more positive outcome. All the expectations expressed by the participants before the start of the Workshop were met.
